Egypt beats Cameroon, will play Senegal in African Cup final

Yaounde, February 4 (BNA): His teammates Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane – two of the most prominent strikers in African football – will face contenders for the continental title.

Salah did not even get a chance to score a penalty for Egypt in their 3-1 penalty shootout win over Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals on Thursday after the hosts failed to score three times from the penalty kick.

It was Clinton Njie’s widespread error that ensured Egypt’s lead after the seven-times African champions netted their first three penalties.

And goalkeeper Mohamed Abu Jabal, who has the name Gabasky on the back of his shirt, saved Egypt twice.

The match ended 0-0 after 120 minutes with the biggest flashpoint nearing the end of the list when Egypt coach Carlos Queiroz was sent off. He will now be banned from the touchline in Sunday’s final against Senegal.

It was the first match at the Olympic Stadium in Yaounde since eight fans died after being crushed outside Cameroon’s Round of 16 match against Comoros last Monday.

The stadium itself will host the final on Sunday when Senegal will seek their first African title after losing the last final of 2019 to Algeria. Senegal should be fresher after an extra day of rest and their victory over Burkina Faso in 90 minutes on Wednesday.

The tournament was held in the middle of the European season, to the frustration of leading European clubs such as Liverpool who were without key players such as Salah and Mane.
