Dortmund suffer blow in title race with scrappy draw at Augsburg

Augsburg, Germany, February 28 (BNA): Borussia Dortmund fell to a 1-1 draw with its host Augsburg on Sunday, falling eight points behind leaders Bayern Munich and suffering a setback in the race for the German League title.

The Ruhr Valley club advanced with a single shot from Thorgan Hazard in the 35th minute, but lost, as Augsburg grabbed the equalizer in the 78th minute through Noah Sarrenren Bazi.

The result left Dortmund with 50 points in second place, eight points behind Bayern, who beat Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 on Saturday. Bayer Leverkusen came third with 44 points.

Dortmund were looking to recover from their midweek Europa League exit against Rangers, but were left without top striker Erling Haaland and captain Marco Reus also lost to a knockout.

The visitors needed Hazard’s superb individual skills to take the lead, as the Belgian broke into the penalty area, two fouls in the penalty area and a shot into the net.

Doniel Malin came close to scoring the second goal in the 51st minute when Augsburg goalkeeper Rafal Jekevich hit the crossbar with his shot.

But Dortmund came off the gas, giving the hosts room to advance and Augsburg took advantage of that when Iago sent the ball into the penalty area and Saarrenen Bazi headed home to settle.
