Pefok, Becker score as Union Berlin retakes Bundesliga lead

Berlin, September 18 (BNA): American strikers Jordan Pivok and Sheraldo Becker scored again on Sunday, bringing Union Berlin back to the top of the German Bundesliga with a 2-0 victory over Wolfsburg.

Becker said Becker made Pivok to open the scoring in the 55th minute, then the Suriname striker clearly raced to win in the 77th minute, giving Union a two-point lead over Borussia Dortmund after seven rounds.

Union fans gave a warm welcome to Timo Baumgartel, who returned to the starting line-up for the first time in five months after being diagnosed with testicular cancer. The 26-year-old defender’s last game in the league was against Eintracht Frankfurt in April.

Former FA star Max Kroos denied receiving fans after losing Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovac, who said the former Germany striker would not play for the club again.

The home team had a better start but couldn’t make a breakthrough. The Wolfsburg defense recovered enough to prevent the ball from quickly reaching Pivok and Becker from Union.

Becker showed his speed past his mark before turning to Pivok for a header. It was America’s third goal in the Bundesliga in six matches since his move this summer from Young Boys.

Becker sealed the ball with Paul Seguin’s shoulder cross after Arnold lost the ball and raced to score his sixth goal of the season.

Pefok and Becker both received standing ovations as they exploded at 87.

After six defeats, Bochum hoped to get his first point later against visiting Cologne. Interim coach Heiko Butcher made his first appearance after the dismissal of Thomas Reiss on Monday.
