Denmark’s queen and Spain’s king test positive for virus

Copenhagen, Feb. 9 (BNA): Both the Queen of Denmark and the King of Spain announced that they had contracted the Corona virus, despite receiving vaccinations, the two kings announced Wednesday.

The palace said Denmark’s Queen Margrethe, 82, has mild symptoms of COVID-19 and is self-isolating at Copenhagen Palace where she lives.

The royal family said Margaret tested positive for the virus on Tuesday night and canceled a planned holiday in Norway that had been scheduled to start on Wednesday.

The announcement came weeks after Margaret celebrated the 50th anniversary of her accession to the throne of Europe’s oldest monarchy. Some planned festivities have been postponed until September due to the pandemic, according to the Associated Press.

However, the Queen did participate in some jubilee events this month, including a wreath at her parents’ grave at Roskilde Cathedral, where members of the Danish royal family have been buried since 1559. She also met the government and attended a reception in Parliament.

Like Margaret, King Philip VI of Spain has been vaccinated against the coronavirus. The royal house said the 54-year-old monarch has been tested for the virus after developing “mild symptoms” of COVID-19.

She added that his “general health” is fine and will remain in isolation for seven days, in accordance with national health protocols. The Royal House said Queen Letizia has not shown any symptoms.

With 90% of its population over the age of 12 having received at least two doses of the coronavirus vaccine, Spain is beginning to roll back health restrictions as the latest omicron-driven increase recedes.
