Colin Powell dies of COVID-19 complications, family says

Washington, October 18 (BNA) Colin Powell, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former Secretary of State, died of complications from the new Corona virus, his family said today, Monday. He was 84 years old.

The family said in an announcement on social media that Powell had received a full vaccination.

“We have lost a wonderful, loving husband, father, grandfather, and a great American,” the family said.

Powell was the first African American to serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State, the Associated Press reported.

But his reputation also suffered a painful setback when Powell appeared in 2003 before the UN Security Council and raised the issue of the US war on Iraq.

He pointed to false information alleging that Saddam Hussein had secretly hidden weapons of mass destruction.

He told the international body of Iraq’s claims that it did not represent a “network of lies”.
