China beats South Korea to win Women’s Asian Cup

SEOUL, Feb. 6 (BNA) China fell two goals to defeat South Korea 3-2 on Sunday and win the Asian Women’s Cup for the ninth time, according to the Associated Press.

Just five days after the men’s team was eliminated from the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, Xiao Yue completed a last-minute goal for China’s thrilling comeback in Navi Mumbai, India.

South Korea looked on their way to their first continental title after scoring twice in the first half. Choi Yo-ri scored the goal in the 27th minute and shortly before the break, Chelsea’s Ji So-yun scored from a penalty kick after Yao Lingwei’s handball.

Halfway through the second half, China awarded their own penalty kick after Lee Young-ju tackled in the area. Tang Jiali scored to reduce the difference and only four minutes later Zhang Jinyan crossed to equalize.

In the final moments, South Korea wasted a great opportunity to regain their lead and secure their first title before Wang Shanshan, who holds the title of Player of the Tournament, set up Xiao to score the dramatic winning goal.

The tournament also serves as the Asian qualifying round for the 2023 World Cup. Korea and China secured their places in the competition hosted by Australia and New Zealand along with semi-finalists Japan and, for the first time, the Philippines.

Vietnam finished fifth in the World Cup after beating Taiwan and Thailand in a home and away match.
