CBUAE issues new five and ten dirham polymer banknotes

Abu Dhabi, April 21 (BNA) The Central Bank of the UAE has launched two new notes in denominations of five and ten dirhams made of polymer and equipped with advanced technical and security features.

The new banknotes are the third issue of the national currency, and reflect the central bank’s goal in keeping pace with the development of the state and its vision in the next fifty years, especially in the financial and economic sectors. These issues come after the success of the initial 50 dirham polymer banknote.

The new denominations of 5 UAE dirhams and 10 UAE dirhams highlight the adoption of sustainable practices by the Central Bank and its efforts to develop enhanced environmental standards in the financial sector, and to promote sustainable growth by using an environmentally friendly and recyclable polymer.

The Emirates News Agency (WAM) stated that these notes are more durable and sustainable than traditional cotton paper banknotes, and last two or more times longer in circulation.

CBUAE has continued the 3rd Edition approach by combining aesthetics and modern technologies in design. Distinctive features of these two papers include a transparent window displaying the portrait of the late founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the UAE brand logo with fluorescent graphics and inscriptions created using advanced intaglio techniques.

When designing the new five-dirham banknote, the Central Bank retained the color characteristics of the same denomination of banknotes currently in circulation to facilitate public recognition. Images of Emirati national and cultural symbols are included in the design.

The image of the ancient archaeological “Ajman Fort” that testifies to the cultural and historical legacy of the ancestors of the Emirates appears in the front and center of this banknote, while the image of “Al-Diya’ Castle” appears in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. One of the cultural highlights of the United Arab Emirates, it appears in the center of the reverse of the banknote.

The new 10 dirham banknote kept its green color, similar to the 10 dirham banknotes currently in circulation. Its central front face features an image of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a religious, national and cultural landmark that has become a world famous destination.

The back side of the center contains a picture of Khorfakkan Theater as one of the unique cultural monuments in the Emirate of Sharjah.

The Central Bank of the UAE has used the latest international standards and technologies in the two new paper notes, using improved technical specifications and high-quality security features (both visible and latent) to enhance consumer confidence and combat counterfeiting of the national currency.

Braille symbols have been added to help blind and visually impaired consumers determine the value of banknotes in banknotes.

The 10 and 5 dirham notes will enter circulation on April 21 and April 26, respectively. Existing banknotes of both denominations will continue to circulate alongside the new polymer notes, as banknotes whose value is guaranteed by UAE law.

Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the Central Bank, said, “The new issue of the five dirhams, ten dirhams and fifty dirhams previously is a source of great pride and honor.”
