Cannes, May 18 (BUS): The Cannes Film Festival opened the red carpet on Tuesday as the Mediterranean port city filled with movie stars, festival-goers and dignitaries to celebrate its 75th anniversary, bringing hype and glamor back to the resort destination.
Actors and filmmakers including Rebecca Hall, Naomi Rapace, Deepika Padukone, Jeff Nichols and Asghar Farhadi, said festival jury president Vincent Lyndon at a press conference packed with jury members: “I am simply very happy.”
Running from May 17-28, the world’s largest film festival returns to its traditional calendar after two years of pandemic turmoil, marking the return of parties and the high hopes from the industry that it will bring audiences back to cinemas.
“Don’t believe the hype, people say he’s dying. I can’t believe it for a second,” said jury member Joachim Trier, referring to cinema, which he praised as “a resplendent, progressive, wonderful art form.”
The Danish-Norwegian director noted that the festival served as a springboard for the career of his grandfather Erik Loeschen, who had a film in competition in 1960. It helped bring “a new, unknown director from a small country in the northern corner of Europe into prominence,” Trier said. .
Forest Whitaker will receive an honorary Palme of the Festival for his lifetime achievement. The actor’s production company is showing a documentary “For Peace” about the war in South Sudan.
With the outbreak of war in Ukraine over the event, discussions about cinemas in times of violence dominated discussions.
“I would say that films are more important than ever,” said jury member Rapace.
“There are a lot of teenagers and children in Russia, for example, today … they are kind of outsiders to what is happening like us. So I think, you know, that films can travel and communicate,” she said.
“With everything that has happened over the past two years — and especially with what has been happening over the past several months, yes, we would be careful to be deserving, respectful, not overly fleeting and smart and stand up — if only,” said Lyndon, the jury’s chief.
