Barcelona, April 23 (BUS): The Camp Nou broke its own world record for women’s soccer match on Friday when more than 91,600 fans celebrated Barcelona’s 5-1 victory over Wolfsburg in the first leg of the semi-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

The 91,648 spectators counted by club officials exceeded 91,553 to watch Barcelona’s victory over Real Madrid last month. The previous record for a women’s game was 90,185 in the 1999 Women’s World Cup Final between the United States and China at the Rose Bowl, the Associated Press (AP) said.

And Alexia Putillas led Barcelona with two goals. The Ballon d’Or winner was one of Barcelona’s four scorers in the first half before earning a penalty and late turn to give them the top spot with 10 goals.

“We are very happy not only with the result but also with the atmosphere on the field. It is amazing that we have set a new record,” said Barcelona midfielder Patricia Guigaro. “What happened today and a month ago left us speechless. As days or years pass, we will better understand what happened. At the moment, we are not fully aware of the scale of this trial.”

The German visitors were dumbfounded right from the start when Aitana Bonmaty took a long pass and scored just two minutes into the match.

Caroline Graham Hansen doubled the advantage in 10th place when she used a soft change of foot to avoid the last defender’s sliding tackle before a left-footed shot into the far post.
