WASHINGTON, Sept. 3 (BNA) – After at least two people were injured and thousands were forced to leave their homes, firefighting officials said today, Saturday, that windswept wildfires broke out in rural Northern California, destroying about 100 homes and other buildings.
California is experiencing a deep drought as it heads toward what is traditionally the worst fire season.
Scientists say climate change has made the West warmer and drier over the past three decades and will continue to make weather more extreme and more frequent and destructive of wildfires.
In the past five years, California has experienced the largest and most devastating fires in the state’s history. The weeds have experienced three major fires since 2014, according to the Associated Press.
The most recent fire started in or near Roseburg Forest Products, which manufactures wood products. Soon, 7,500 people were ordered to evacuate.
Jodi Christenson, 63, said a fire in Oregon nearly 40 years ago burned down her home within six minutes as she scrambled to evacuate her three children.
This experience left her traumatized and she is now frightened every time a fire breaks out near her house in the weeds. She keeps leashes on her dogs all the time so she can easily grab them if they need to leave with a moment’s notice.
