London, November 6 (BNA) British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the coronation of King Charles III will be celebrated with an additional banking holiday across the country on Monday, May 8, shortly after the coronation of King Charles III on May 6.
Charles, 73, became automatically king after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, in September, but the grand coronation for him and his wife Camilla is taking place next year.
The Prime Minister’s Office said the late Queen’s coronation in 1953 was accompanied by an additional bank holiday and awarding in 2023 would follow this tradition, giving families and communities time to enjoy the historic event.
“The coronation of the new monarch is a unique moment for our country,” Sunak said in a statement on Sunday. “In recognition of this historic occasion, I am pleased to announce an additional UK bank holiday next year.”
The ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey in London and will follow the traditional festival used to anoint kings over the past 1,000 years.
The kings and queens of England, and later Britain and the United Kingdom, have been crowned at Westminster Abbey since William the Conqueror in 1066. Charles is the 41st king in the dynasty that traces back to William, and will be the oldest monarch. to be crowned.
Charles is the King and Head of State not only of the United Kingdom but of 14 other kingdoms including Australia, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
This year, Britain held two additional holidays, one to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee in June, and a second on her funeral day in September.
