Brazil’s east hit by floods after two dams break under heavy rainfall

MEXICO CITY, DECEMBER 27 (BNA) More than 60 districts in the Brazilian state of Bahia were hit by floods on Sunday after weeks of torrential rain, according to the local governor.

The German news agency (DPA) reported that the floods came after two dams exploded at the end of last week.

Bahia Governor Rui Costa said on Twitter that helicopters and boats were saving people. “The priority now is to save lives.”

Meanwhile, officials have taken to social media to urge residents near the embankments to seek shelter.

Bahia has been suffering for weeks from storms that have caused floods and landslides. According to Brazilian media reports, 18 people died due to the severe weather. The G1 news website reported that at least 20,000 people have been made homeless since November.

In a dam disaster in the city of Brumadinho, Brazil, at least 260 people were killed in a mudslide at the beginning of 2019.
