Maryland Dec. 20 (U.S.): An emerging winter storm is expected to bring frigid conditions across much of the United States this week, including snow that will likely cause travel delays before the Christmas weekend, experts say. Meteorological.
According to Reuters, the Midwest and Great Lakes could see a major blizzard starting Thursday, while cold air moving east could cause quick freezes in temperatures across the country, according to the National Weather Service.
“It doesn’t look like a good day to travel across the Midwest on a Friday,” said Greg Karpin, chief of forecast operations at the NWS Weather Prediction Center. “It’s sure to feel almost winter-like from coast to coast.”
He warned that airports and roads from Chicago to areas of St. Louis could experience disruptions starting Thursday, while the rest of the country struggles with cooler temperatures.
The greatest danger is in the states of Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, as well as parts of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. Carbin said snow amounts could exceed a foot.
Rain and thunderstorms may hit the southern states through Thursday, after which temperatures can drop significantly. He added that the cold winds in the Gulf coast could reach 30 degrees.
“The cold wind is going to be very cold,” he said.
The NWS also warned of a “chilling” cold in parts of Washington state across the northern plain states, including Montana, Wyoming and Dakota.
Parts of Montana could see the thermometer dip below minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-29 degrees Celsius) on Tuesday, according to the NWS.
