Biden cheers debt ceiling ‘crisis averted’ from Oval Office

Washington, June 3 (BNA): US President Joe Biden declared on Friday “averting a crisis” in his first speech from the Oval Office of the White House, referring to the passage of a bill to suspend the US debt ceiling and avert an economic disaster.

Biden seized the moment to appeal to Americans to bridge the divisions, saying his compromise with prominent Republican congressman Kevin McCarthy showed what can be done, Reuters reported.

“No matter how hard our politics get, we need to see each other not as enemies but as fellow Americans,” he said, and asked Americans to “stop ranting, lower the temperature and work together to make progress.”

Biden, a Democrat, said he would sign the bill into law on Saturday, ending months of uncertainty and averting what could have been the first American default as early as June 5.

“Getting an agreement was critical, which is very good news for the American people. Nobody got everything they wanted. But the American people got what they needed,” Biden said while sitting at the historic “Resolute Desk” in the presidency. office.

“We have avoided an economic crisis and economic collapse,” he said.

After tough negotiations, both the Senate and House of Representatives passed a bill this week suspending the government’s $31.4 trillion debt ceiling.

Biden said that to maintain the economic progress of the United States, it was necessary to maintain the country’s full confidence and credit in tact. “The stakes couldn’t be higher,” Biden said.
