Benzema converts 2 of 3 penalties, Madrid wins at Celta 2-1

Madrid, April 2 / BNA / After Karim Benzema returned from injury, Real Madrid returned to the road to winning the Spanish League after the French striker scored two penalties in the 2-1 win over its host Celta Vigo on Saturday.

Benzema, who also saved another penalty in Vigo, missed Real Madrid’s 4-0 defeat by Barcelona two weeks before the international break after recovering from a left leg injury.

Celta moved the game to the league leaders, only to be undone by some rushing in defense in their area and some borderline calls by the referee, according to the Associated Press.

Benzema’s third penalty kick came in the 70th minute after a questionable foul when Ferland Mendy tripped over Kevin Vazquez’s leg. Celta also scored a goal conceded in the first half after a video review.

“The first two were penalties, but the third was not,” Celta striker Iago Aspas said. “Mendy was running at full strength and ran over our defender. I think it was a mistake in our best interest.”

Real Madrid opened a 12-point difference over Seville and a 15-point advantage over Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
