Belgian foreign minister steps down to help sick husband

Brussels, April 21 (BNA): Belgium’s foreign minister will step down so she has more time to devote to her husband, who has been diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer.

Sophie Willems said in a letter Thursday that her job “requires rigor, availability and total commitment that will not allow me to provide the help and comfort Christopher and our children need.”

“I want to be there for him like he’s always been there for us,” Wilmes said in a Twitter message.

Willems, 47, served as the first female prime minister of Belgium during the 2019-2020 period. She was also the country’s first female foreign minister.

It was not immediately clear who would take the job.
