Beijing begins offering booster shots ahead of Olympics

BEIJING, Oct. 22 (BNA): China’s capital, Beijing, has begun providing enhanced footage against COVID-19, four months before the city and its surroundings are due to host the Winter Olympics, according to the Associated Press.

State media reported Friday that anyone 18 or older who has received two doses of Chinese vaccines and belongs to high-risk groups, including participants, organizers or workers in gaming facilities, will be eligible for the extra shot.

The booster has been rolled out in cities across the vast country since late September, but Beijing authorities have been more cautious about who takes the extra hit.

The games are set to begin on February 4 with only residents of China allowed in the stands. Indoor events with sliding, skating and jumping will be held in the suburb of Yanqing and the neighboring city of Zhangjiakou.

China has largely succeeded in preventing local transmission with strict requirements on mask wearing, quarantine and contact tracing. However, cases continued to emerge, with 28 new cases reported on Friday, including one in the Beijing suburb of Fengtai.
