Bayern loses in Mainz and Dortmund moves top in Bundesliga

BERLIN, April 22 (BNA): Bayern Munich lost and Borussia Dortmund seized their chance as the Bundesliga won a new leader on Saturday, the Associated Press reports.

Donyell Malen scored twice in Dortmund’s 4-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt as the ‘Black and Yellow’ capitalized on Bayern’s previous 3-1 defeat at Mainz to move one point above the reigning champions with five rounds remaining.

The pressure was on Dortmund after they failed to capitalize on Bayern’s 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim last weekend, but Edin Terzic’s side responded with a committed performance to aggressively declare their credentials. Dortmund is seeking to end Bayern’s 10-year reign as German champions.

Jude Bellingham opened the scoring in the 19th minute, pulling the ball past a defender with his first touch before shooting inside the far post, Mallen scored the first five minutes later, then Mats Hummels headed in Dortmund’s third before the break.

After conceding three goals to 10-man VfB Stuttgart last weekend, Dortmund may have needed Mallen to sort out the problem in the 66th minute. Karim Adeyemi set up both of the Dutchman’s goals.
