Bahrain to mark World Lung Cancer Day

Manama, July 31 (BNA) Bahrain joins the international community in celebrating World Lung Cancer Day in 2022, which is celebrated around the world on August 1, under the slogan “Closing the Care Gap”.

World Lung Cancer Day is celebrated to raise awareness of lung cancer, reduce mortality rates, support research seeking a cure, educate those at risk of developing lung cancer, and increase public awareness of the harms of smoking.

Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, and it kills more lives annually than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined.

According to studies, smoking is the most common cause of lung cancer, and the risk of developing it can be reduced by quitting smoking and secondhand smoke. There are other risk factors, such as environmental factors, radiation exposure, some chronic lung diseases, pre-existing cancer and others.

All age groups, whether old or young, men and women, can develop lung cancer.

Studies and research have indicated that early detection is effective in treating lung cancer. Since most people do not develop symptoms in the early stages of the disease, regular lung examination is important for its prevention or early detection.

On the occasion of World Lung Cancer Day, the Bahraini Ministry of Health is keen to hold awareness events for lung cancer patients and their families, smokers, passive smokers, health workers, health associations and organizations and all members of society in general. With the aim of spreading awareness about lung cancer.
