Bahrain selected among 25 countries to implement the WHO plan to accelerate progress toward reducing obesity

Manama, August 13 (BNA) Bahrain was selected among a group of 25 countries and the first among the Gulf Cooperation Council countries to implement the World Health Organization’s plan to accelerate progress towards reducing obesity.


A remote meeting was held to discuss the details of the plan, which will be implemented in coordination with representatives of the Geneva-based World Health Organization, the Middle East regional headquarters, and the WHO office in Bahrain.


The Ministry of Health’s Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health, Dr. Maryam Al-Hajri, who leads the Bahrain team, welcomed Bahrain’s arrangement to implement the World Health Organization’s plan to accelerate progress towards reducing obesity.


“The achievement reflects Bahrain’s keenness to enhance people’s health by developing policies aimed at reducing risk factors leading to non-communicable diseases, especially obesity,” she said.


Dr. Buthaina Ajlan, Head of the Nutrition Department at the Bahrain Nutrition Program, gave a presentation, in which she highlighted Bahrain’s strategies and plans to eliminate obesity and the legislation and laws issued to support their implementation.


Dr. Dalal Al-Rumaihi, Consultant Endocrinology and Diabetes, Member of the National Committee for Non-communicable Diseases and Member of the Board of Directors of the Bahrain Diabetes Society gave a presentation in which she gave an overview of the role of the Bahrain Diabetes Society in reducing obesity rates among all age groups.


She highlighted the Society’s activities and programs to eliminate obesity in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and other relevant bodies in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
