Argentina hints at post-Messi era in youthful squad

Buenos Aires, March 7 (BNA): Argentina’s squad for the last two rounds of South American qualifiers for the World Cup showed that coach Lionel Scaloni may think about the future without Lionel Messi.

Franco, Valentin Carboni, Alejandro Garnacho, Nicolas Paz, Thiago Giralnic and Luca Romero play in the youth teams of European clubs, but Argentina called them up on Monday.

Messi was also selected after he missed the last two rounds of playoffs this year as he recovered from COVID-19, according to the Associated Press.

Argentina faces Venezuela in Buenos Aires on March 25, and four days later they face Ecuador in Guayaquil.

The six youth division players were either born to Argentine families based in Europe or were born in Argentina and started their career abroad. Argentina have already qualified for the World Cup in Qatar this year.
