Formula E title goes down to Sunday’s finale in Seoul

SEOUL, Aug. 13 (BNA) The all-electric Formula E championship will be decided in the final race of the season on Sunday in Seoul, 21 points ahead of its only remaining competitor, Mercedes’ Mitch Evans, Stoffel Vandoorne.

New Zealander Evans won Saturday’s first race with two heads for Jaguar, after grabbing the lead in the first corner from third on the net, with Belgium’s Vandoorne finishing fifth at the Seoul Olympic Stadium.

The first E-Prix held in the South Korean capital ended behind the safety car after a late crash involving Alexander Sims of Mahindra, Reuters reported.

Vandoorne, the former McLaren Formula 1 driver, has 195 points against 174 Evans with Mercedes also at the top of the team standings.

Vandoorne would be champion if he finished at least seventh on Sunday.

Double DS Techeetah champion Jean-Eric Vergne and Eduardo Mortara Venturi were knocked out of the sports title race in a race that started on wet and slippery tracks and the red flag was raised after an early build-up of eight cars.

Outgoing champion Nick de Vries was one of those involved, escaping unharmed after his Mercedes under the Nissan of Swiss driver Sebastien Buemi got stuck.

“It was a tough morning,” Evans said after his fourth win of the season. “We didn’t have the speed but the rain came just in time and I qualified up front.”

The Jaguar driver, who has won consecutive wins before, added.
