Alpine skiing-Austria win gold in mixed team, Shiffrin’s US miss out

Yanqing, China, Feb. 20 (BNA): Austria won the gold medal in the mixed alpine ski team event at the Beijing Olympics on Sunday, defeating Germany in the final, while Michaela Schiffrin and the United States both missed a medal.

Norway took the bronze after beating the United States in the third-place race, according to Reuters.

The gold and bronze medal races were decided in combined times after finishing 2-2.

The team event, in its second edition only after being presented in Pyeongchang in 2018, was postponed from Saturday after strong winds forced the postponement.

It was still windy Sunday and sub-zero temperatures as skiers crowded under blankets at the finish area while watching their teammates race.

In the semi-finals, Austria defeated Norway on several occasions while Germany defeated the United States 3-1.

Shiffrin, who has competed in all five individual events, was hoping to leave with at least a medal from the team event but lost three consecutive races as her team finished fourth.
