United Nations, Jan. 5 (BNA): The UN Security Council added five new members on Tuesday, with Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates officially taking over the positions they won in the June elections.
Ambassadors made brief remarks, placed their countries’ flags alongside the flags of other members outside council rooms, and posed for a group photo – wearing face masks and standing apart, in recognition of the rampant coronavirus pandemic. The flag ceremony is a tradition that the Kazakh started when he was on the Majlis in 2018.
The 15-member Security Council is the most powerful body in the United Nations. The Associated Press said China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States are permanent members, with veto power.
The other members are elected by the 193-member General Assembly for staggered two-year terms that are allotted by the global regions.
Estonia, Niger, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam ended their stints on Friday.
