African Cup organisers change venues for 3 knockout games

Yaoundé, January 26 (BNA): The organizers of the African Cup of Nations announced on Wednesday the change of venues for two quarter-final matches and one semi-final match.

A quarter-final match scheduled for Sunday was moved from Yaounde’s Olympic Stadium across the city to Ahmedou Ahidjo Stadium after eight people were killed in a stampede outside an Olympic during the Round of 16 match between hosts Cameroon and Comoros on Monday.

Another 38 were injured, seven are in a critical condition in hospital, and the Confederation of African Football had already indicated it would move that match away from Olympia, according to the Associated Press.

But CAF also said that it will once again move in the quarter-finals and semi-finals from the Jaboma stadium in Douala to the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium.

No reason was given for moving these two matches, but there were complaints from teams about the condition of the stadium in Douala.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has not announced its decision on the other semi-final match, which is scheduled to take place at the Olympic Stadium. She said that would depend on the results of an investigation into the deadly stampede, which was attributed to security failures at the stadium.

The Confederation of African Football said it needs to review this report before the semi-final match at Olympia begins next Thursday. Olympe’s hosting of the African Cup final on February 6th is also in doubt and will depend on the results of the investigation.
