ACI Director General – Asia-Pacific meets WHO’s Bahrain representative

Manama, November 10 / BNA / The CEO of Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) Mohammed Yousef Al-Binfalah and Director General of Airports Council International (ACI) Stefano Baronchi visited the representative of the World Health Organization in Bahrain, Dr. Tasneem. Atatreh to discuss the recovery of the aviation industry amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The main obstacle to the resumption and growth of traffic is coordination. Until border control, visa regulations and testing protocols are coordinated, airline networks will continue to face disruption. Travelers are also apprehensive about traveling and unsure of what to expect upon reaching their destination, so it will take time for the joy of travel to return. However, having a common denominator on minimum requirements would go a long way toward helping the industry recover faster than expected. We remain committed to working alongside the ACI and the World Health Organization to keep the Kingdom’s aviation sector moving safely and effectively.

WHO recognizes the importance of maintaining the strong capabilities set out in the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) at points of entry. As countries gradually resume or readjust non-essential international travel, the introduction of risk mitigation measures aimed at reducing travel-related exports, import and post-transmission of SARS-CoV-2 should be based on comprehensive, systematic and routine risk assessments. The public health and well-being of communities must be at the forefront of considerations when deciding on and implementing international measures related to travel, which must be communicated to the public in a timely manner,” said Dr. Atatreh.

ACI represents global airports and their collective interests. It promotes professional excellence in airport management and operations, and works closely with prominent aviation organizations such as the International Civil Aviation Organization and the International Air Transport Association to develop standards, policies and recommended practices.
