A 3rd generation of Maldini family scores in Serie A

Rome, Sep 25 (U.S.): Like a grandfather, like a father, like a son. There was a third generation of the Maldini family scoring in Serie A on Saturday as Daniel Maldini helped Milan win 2-1 at Spezia.

Daniel Maldini scored his first Serie A goal 13 years later, 179 days after his father Paolo’s last league goal – against Atalanta in 2008 – and 60 years later, 22 days after his grandfather Cesar scored against Catania in 1961.

Paolo Maldini, who is now technical director at the club where he has made more than 900 appearances as a player, jumped from his seat in celebration of the goal shortly after the start of the second half.

Daniele Verdi equalized for Spezia 10 minutes before the end, but substitute Brahim Diaz restored Milan’s lead after six minutes.

Milan advanced to the top of the league by one point over Napoli, who plays with Cagliari on Sunday, according to the Associated Press.

Inter Milan, the defending champion, is two points behind its rival in the city, after drawing 2-2 with Atalanta in a very enjoyable match that saw 43 shots on goal and the Nerazzurri missed a late penalty.

Later on Saturday, Genoa host Hellas Verona in its first match since it was sold to new US owners.

It was Daniel Maldini’s first start for Milan, and the 19-year-old broke the tie three minutes into the second half when he headed in a Pierre Kallolo’s cross that was too powerful on Spezia goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet.
