75th Cannes to feature Cronenberg, Chan-wook and ‘Elvis’

Paris, April 15 (BNA) The films of David Cronenberg, Park Chan-wook and Kelly Richardt will compete for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, set against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine.

Cannes Film Festival artistic director Thierry Frémaux and president Pierre Lisquiere announced the lineup for this year’s 75th Festival de Cannes at a press conference Thursday in Paris, reports the Associated Press.

After canceling the 2020 event and hosting a slightly smaller 2021 edition, the French Riviera festival is looking to regain its former allure of the pandemic with some 35,000 accredited people expected to attend next month.

The 18 films announced for the prestigious Cannes competition list feature new works by several previous Palme d’Or winners, including Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda (“Realtor”), Swedish social satirist Robin Ostlund (“Sorrow Triangle”) and the two Belgian brothers. Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (“Torrey and Lucita”).

Also in competition: Cronenberg’s “Future Crimes” starring Lea Seydoux, Kristen Stewart and Viggo Mortensen; Kelly Reichardt’s “Appearance” that brings her together with “Wendy and Lucy” star Michelle Williams; Korean mystery film Chan-wook “Decision to Leave”; and French director Claire Denis, “Stars at Noon” with Marguerite Qualley.

Fremaux said the French Riviera’s 75th anniversary “occurs in special circumstances in a world that has changed and will continue to change”.

Hollywood’s biggest anticipated event at Cannes has already been announced, including the screening of “Top Gun: Maverick,” which will be accompanied by a tribute to superstar Tom Cruise. The sequel to Top Gun will play out of competition, as will Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis Presley, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks.
