558 inmates benefit from alternative penalties

Manama, April 11 (BNA): The Chief Executive of the Enforcement Prosecution stated that the Public Prosecution continues to implement the Penal Code and Alternative Procedures and its provisions, by replacing freedom-restricting penalties with alternative penalties, in accordance with the applicable regulations, and based on the result of a study of the conditions of convicts and inmates at the General Directorate of Correction and Rehabilitation.


He pointed out that this is in line with royal directives to expand the scope of application of the Alternative Sentences Law, taking into account the personal and social circumstances of the convicts, and the humanitarian reasons for that.


He indicated that the Public Prosecution Office had received requests from the General Directorate for the Implementation of Alternative Sentences and Penalties to replace freedom-restricting sentences with alternative sentences for some inmates.


He added that the cases were studied and the sentences of 558 inmates who met the conditions were replaced, which raises the total number of those who have benefited from the law since its inception to 5432 convicts, indicating that the alternative penalties included implementation. Community service and attending rehabilitation and training programs.


The Attorney General revealed that 46 convicts were registered in the latest training and rehabilitation programs within the open prison system, by subjecting them to psychological and social rehabilitation programs to rehabilitate them and reintegrate them into society.

He pointed out that the Execution Prosecution is constantly cooperating with the General Directorate for Executing Alternative Sentences and Sentences and the General Directorate for Reform and Rehabilitation at the Ministry of Interior to assess the conditions of convicts and take the necessary measures to replace the penalties against them. Those who fulfill the conditions set based on personal and objective justifications that require that, and under full judicial supervision.

He added that the Public Prosecution is following up the implementation of alternative penalties and the extent of compliance with them in order to take legal measures in case of violation.
