5,000-year-old settlement unearthed in Oman

Al-Mudhaibi, Jan. 3 (BNA): An exploration team uncovered a 5,000-year-old settlement in the second season of archaeological excavations at the Al-Gharin archaeological site in the Wilayat of Al-Mudhaibi in the Sultanate of Oman.

The Oman News Agency stated that this discovery was the result of cooperation between Sultan Qaboos University and the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.

The excavation team was headed by Prof. Dr. Nasser Saeed Al-Jahuri, Department of Archeology, Sultan Qaboos University. It included Dr. Khaled Douglas and Dr. Muhammad Hussain.

The silt settlement has a unique organization and layout and features a tower structure surrounded by multi-room dwellings, a cemetery with mass graves and other building remains. It is distinguished by its large buildings, each of which reaches 600 square meters.

Alluvial settlement played a major role in the region, with manifestations of human activities that included early agriculture, herding, copper smelting, and trade, particularly between the coastal and Indus communities.
