Dhaka, June 5 (BNA): A massive fire broke out at an indoor container depot in southeastern Bangladesh, killing at least 16 people and injuring more than 150 others.

The fire broke out at a container facility Saturday night in Sitaconda, 40 kilometers from the coastal city of Chittagong, causing explosions of several containers after a huge explosion at the site, officials said.

Firefighters are still working to put out the fire on Sunday morning, Farouk Hussain Sheker, a fire official said. Local residents said the explosion shook the neighborhood and shattered the windows of nearby houses.

Civil surgeon in Chittagong, Muhammad Ilyas Hussain, said the death toll may rise as some of the injured are in critical condition. He explained that among the wounded were firefighters and policemen.

He urged all doctors in the area to help address the situation and called for emergency blood donations.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear. Fire service officials said they suspect it may have originated from a container containing hydrogen peroxide and quickly spread to other containers.

In 2020, three people were killed after an oil tanker exploded in a container depot in Patinga district of Chittagong.
