Atlanta Nov. 2 (Usa): Tra Young scored 26 points and Clint Capella had 16 points and 12 rebounds, the Atlanta Hawks beat the Washington Wizards 118-111 on Monday night.
Bradley Beal scored 19 of 24 first-half points for Washington, whose three-way winning streak was interrupted and he lost his fifth in a row at State Farm Arena. The victory would have given Washington (5-2) their best start to the 1974-75 season as the lead started 7-0, the Associated Press reported.
Young went 11-for-11 from the free throw line as Atlanta finished 29-for-29 on fouls.
The Hawks, who lost 122-111 in Washington last week, broke ground in a two-game slide. Bogdan Bogdanovic finished with 16 points for Atlanta (4-3), and Cam Reddish added 15 points from the bench.
Washington struggled to pull off two numbers after making jumper DeAndre Hunter 105-94 with 5:12 remaining. Bogdanovic followed 3 from the left wing, and the Wizards missed the third straight jump ahead of Reddish, dropping close to the baseline, feeding John Collins with a back pass and an easy pass to put Atlanta ahead 110-94 with 3:32 to go.
“First thing, it always starts with moving the ball,” Collins said after hitting a career high with six assists. “It’s always difficult to guard moving the ball from side to side in this league. We have guys who can contribute at a high level and we just wanted to make sure that we execute and put the players in a position where they can play their game. We kept doing that tonight. When we play like this, it’s easy. Always winning.”
The Wizards sealed an eight-goal lead after Kentavious Caldwell-Pope stole the ball from Young and fed Kyle Kuzma to a stoppage that made the score 110-102 with 1:27 remaining. Soon, Hawks coach Nate McMillan called a timeout.
Young followed by hitting a pair of free throws, but Spencer Dinwiddie responded with a three-point play that reduced the lead to 112-105 with 1:14 remaining.
After Reddish hit a pair of fouls, the Wizards called the timeout 57.5 seconds before Caldwell-Pope 3 missed, and Collins hit two free throws to give the Hawks an advantage 114-105.
This basically ended it.
The Wizards, who kind of looked like Atlanta kept switching between man and area defenses, didn’t score in the third quarter until Caldwell Pope played three points at the 7:20 mark. Both Young and Bogdanovic scored a No. 3 that made it 75-60, and Washington coach Wes Onseld Jr. called the timeout.
It didn’t make much of a difference at first as Hawks extended the lead to 80-64 in Young’s three-point play, but the handlers closed the quarter on 17-9 to make him 84-77 to enter fourth.
“There were at least three extensions where we were going for two and a half to three minutes where we wouldn’t score,” Onseld said. “We played late and saw a little bit up in the numbers, but those stretches were sore. Obviously we struggled in the third quarter and were only able to muster 17 points.
“You know, it’s one of those things when those moments happen, we’d get looking good, and it’s kind of frustrating when it doesn’t go down. We can’t let that affect the other end of the floor.”
Atlanta led by as many as 13 in the first inning, but the Magicians closed in on a three-in-14-footer for Bale in the final seconds before the break. Washington scored 37 goals in the second quarter.
The Hawks closed first in the 18-5 round.
“I think we’re starting to understand where we need to be on the offensive,” Young said. “The guys get to their places faster and the guys are ready to put on the plays. I think it’s going to take some time. We’re starting to get a little bit more flowing.”
