World Medical Association chair calls for broad use of Covid boosters

Berlin, 2 November (BUS) – Frank Ulrich Montgomery, the German doctor who heads the World Medical Association, has called for the mass use of booster doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.

“Anyone who was fully vaccinated six months ago should get a booster soon,” Montgomery told Funke Media Group newspapers in comments published on Tuesday.German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

He said a new central vaccination campaign is needed in Germany this fall, which should promote both Covid-19 to unvaccinated and booster doses.

“Because immune protection is reduced after six months, we as a society must have an interest in that protection remaining stable,” Montgomery emphasized.

He said booster jabs should be administered by general practitioners, saying they have the ability as well as the expertise to do the job.

It would be a mistake to rely on vaccination centers again, Montgomery said, noting that this would cost 10 times the cost of vaccinating people in doctors’ offices.

Another advantage is the fact that people will be more likely to go to their regular doctor rather than a vaccination center to get a booster injection.

German Health Minister Jens Spahn has called for vaccination centers in the 16 federal states to open again, as pressure grows to offer a booster dose to more people against Covid-19.
