World Cup leader Shiffrin to miss races after positive Covid test

Stuttgart, Dec. 28 (BNA) World Cup host Michaela Schiffrin said she has tested positive for the coronavirus and will miss this week’s races in Austria.

“I wanted to let you all know I’m doing really well, but unfortunately I got a positive COVID test result,” American Shiffrin wrote on Twitter.

“I’m following protocol and unarmed, and I’ll miss Linz… Thank you all for your support. See you in the new year.”

The Linz races are a giant slalom on Tuesday and slalom on Wednesday, with Schiffrin winning both races in 2019, German news agency dpa reports.

Her participation in the Zagreb slalom on January 4 as well as the giant slalom and slalom in Maribor on January 8 and 9 could be in jeopardy.

Multiple world and Olympic champion Shiffrin to contract Sars-CoV-2, after world champion Lara Gut Bahrami of Switzerland and Austrian Katharina Linsberger also missed the races after positive tests.

Shiffrin tops the AA World Cup overall standings for a fourth title. It is also first in the list of giant slalom and second in the order of zig zag.

Her top spots will be in jeopardy, especially if she also misses the three races in early January.

Each missed race also prevents Shiffrin from getting any closer to the records to win the race.

The top places in three seasons raised her career tally to 72, just 10 places behind her compatriot Lindsey Vonn’s 82nd women’s leader, and 14 behind the record 86 set by Sweden’s Ingmar Stenmark.

Missing the upcoming Games races would leave Shiffrin with only one World Cup race each in her specialty giant slalom and slalom ahead of the Beijing Winter Olympics, as she seeks multiple medals.
