Wolves’ Hwang urges fans to display mature attitude after facing racist abuse in friendly

Wolverhampton, Aug 3 (BUS) – Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Hwang Hee-chan has called for an end to racism and urged sports fans to have a “more mature attitude” after they were subjected to racist abuse during a pre-season friendly match in Portugal.

Wolverhampton condemned the offense in a statement on Sunday after their 1-1 draw with Portugal’s Varens, in which South Korea’s Hwang scored a penalty, but did not specify which player it was directed at, Reuters reported.

“We are very disappointed to report that one of our players was subjected to discriminatory abuse by opposition fans during tonight’s match with SC Farenci,” said Wolves.

“We will report the incident to UEFA and ask our opponent and the relevant authorities to investigate. Racism in any form is absolutely unacceptable and should never be left unchallenged.”

Hwang thanked his club and fans for their messages of support in an Instagram post on Tuesday.

“We are all the same human beings,” Hwang said. “We all need to have a mature attitude about enjoying the sport.

“I really hope today will be the last day people suffer from racism, not just in sports, but everywhere. No to racism.”

Wolverhampton, who finished 10th last season, start their Premier League campaign with a trip to Leeds United on August 6.
