Geneva, March 8 (BNA): A group of experts convened by the World Health Organization on Tuesday said it “strongly supports urgent and widespread access to booster doses, reversing the previous UN agency’s insistence that boosters were not necessary and contributed to the unfair vaccine.”
The World Health Organization said in a statement that its expert team concluded that immunization with licensed COVID-19 vaccines provides high levels of protection against severe disease and death amid global circulation of the highly contagious omicron variant.
She said vaccination, including the use of boosters, is especially important for people at risk of serious disease.
Last year, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called for a halt to the booster doses while dozens of countries began giving the doses, saying that rich countries should immediately donate these vaccines to poor countries instead. WHO scientists said at the time that they would continue to evaluate the data received.
Numerous scientific studies have since proven that booster doses of approved vaccines help restore diminished immunity and protect against dangerous COVID-19.
