WHO: 1.6 million Covid-19 vaccines in Afghanistan will expire soon

Islamabad, October 6 (BNA) Today, Wednesday, the World Health Organization said that about 1.6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines in Afghanistan’s stockpile must be used as soon as possible, otherwise they will expire soon.

With all the hardships on the ground, the WHO said it is working with partners in at least 16 Afghan provinces to increase testing and vaccination against Covid-19.

The World Health Organization in Afghanistan has aimed to vaccinate at least 20 percent of the population of an estimated 32 million people, among other goals.

And the World Health Organization announced, on Wednesday, that it had sent medical packages to two hospitals in Kabul and the organization’s regional offices, enough to cover the needs of 50,000 people.

Since August, the World Health Organization said it has sent life-saving medicines and supplies to 360 medical facilities in Afghanistan, enough to meet the needs of about 3.9 million people.

The organization said earlier that the health system in Afghanistan is on the verge of collapse unless urgent measures are taken.

According to World Health Organization data, nine out of 37 hospitals for Covid-19 already closed in September, and thousands of healthcare workers across the country went without their salaries for months.
