Washington Monument vandalized, one man taken into custody

Washington, September 21 (BNA) A man was arrested after vandalizing the Washington Monument late Tuesday night, police said, adding that the area around the monument’s base was temporarily closed.

“The area around the Washington Monument base is temporarily closed. The USPP has an adult man in custody on charges of vandalism. NPS (National Park Service) guards will work on restoration,” United States Park Police (USPP) said on Twitter.

Pictures posted on Twitter by local media showed red stained paint on the western side of the memorial’s base, according to Reuters.

The 550-foot-high monument is a popular tourist attraction and is located on the National Mall between the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol Building in Washington, DC.
