Wales or Cymru? Welsh considering name change in soccer

Manama, Oct. 31 (BNA): The Wales soccer team is considering a name change after the World Cup, according to the Associated Press. The Football Association of Wales wants its teams to be called ‘Cymru’ the Welsh name for Wales at international level to reflect what it is called locally.

Talks will intensify after the upcoming tournament in Qatar, when Wales will appear in the World Cup finals for the first time since 1958. Noel Money, chief executive of the Football Association of Wales, said. “Our view at the moment is that locally we are obviously called Cymru.

This is what we call our national teams. If you look at our website, and how we talk about ourselves, we’re a lot of Cymru. “Internationally, we feel we have more work to do so far. So we are going to this World Cup like Wales. But I think 2023 will be a year when we have a good discussion with all the different stakeholders.”

The issue was highlighted this month when Wales was drawn into the same qualifying group as Turkey for the 2024 European Championship, and Turkey is now competing on the international stage as “Turkiye”, its Turkish name rather than the English version.

Moni said there had been “informal discussions” with UEFA on various occasions about how Turkey and other countries could change their names to their own language.
