Villa manager Gerrard to sit out two games after positive COVID test

Aston FC said on December 26 (BNA): Aston Villa coach Steven Gerrard will miss the next two matches in the Premier League after testing positive for COVID-19.

Gerrard, 41, who joined the club last month, will miss Sunday’s home game against Chelsea and Tuesday’s trip to Leeds United while in isolation.

Former Liverpool and England captain Gerrard has led Villa to four wins in six league games since taking charge of the team after the sacking of Dean Smith.

Villa is ranked 10th in the league with 22 points from 17 games.

A club statement read: “Aston Villa can confirm that manager Steven Gerrard will not be able to attend the next two Premier League matches with Chelsea and Leeds United as he will be isolated after testing positive for COVID-19.”

Villa’s league match at home to Burnley last week was postponed about two hours before kick-off due to the COVID-19 outbreak at the club.

90 new cases of COVID-19 were detected among Premier League players and staff last week, while 13 matches have been postponed so far due to the virus.

Britain reported 122,186 new daily cases of COVID-19 on Friday as it battled a surge in infections fueled by the omicron variable.
