US women to face Iceland, New Zealand and Czech Republic

Chicago, Jan. 5 (BUS): The United States will play Iceland, New Zealand and the Czech Republic in next month’s Sheppels Cup.

The seventh annual event will take place February 17-23 at venues in Carson, California, and Frisco, Texas.

The United States, the World Cup holders, is focused on qualifying for the 2023 World Cup. The CONCACAF W tournament will take place this summer and determine the fourth in the region.

New Zealand has an automatic berth in the 2023 World Cup as co-host with Australia, according to the Associated Press.

After the United States finished bronze at the Tokyo Olympics last year, US coach Vlatko Andonovsky focused on developing young players.

“These will be the first matches of a truly important year, and with the focus on the World Cup qualifiers, the Shepelevs Cup will be of great value to the team’s continued development,” Andonovsky said in a statement.

The SheBelieves Cup is a tournament in which the winner is determined by points. The teams will play double headers, first and second at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, and final matches at Toyota Stadium in Frisco.

The United States has won the last two SheBelieves Cup tournaments.
