US women beat Jamaica 5-0 at the W Championship

Washington, July 8 (BNA): The US women’s soccer team qualified for the 2023 World Cup on Thursday evening in the CONCACAF W tournament, according to the Associated Press.

The United States defeated Jamaica 5-0 at the BBVA Stadium, but had to wait for Haiti to beat Mexico 3-0 in the late game to secure a place in next summer’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

With two W Championship wins, the United States were at the top of their group and became the first team to win one of the four World Cup berths in the region.

The US Women have qualified in every World Cup Final, winning the last two and four overall tournaments.

Sophia Smith scored two goals for the United States in the first eight minutes against the Reggae Girls.

Rose Laville scored in the 59th minute and Christy Moyes added a goal in the 83rd minute.

About three minutes later, Trinity Rodman, the daughter of former NBA player Dennis Rodman, scored her second international goal.

Roselord Borghella and Nerelia Mondesire converted the penalty shootout and Shirley Jody added a goal for Haiti in the win over Mexico, wowing the tournament hosts.

The Americans will face Mexico while the Reggie Girls will play Haiti in the final group game on Monday. Haiti could clinch its first place in the World Cup by drawing or beating Jamaica.

Eight teams were playing in the W Championship, divided into two groups. The two best teams in each group qualify for the World Cup. The two third-placed teams will advance to an intercontinental playoff in New Zealand in February.
