UN’s Guterres: Climate change increases risk of violent conflict

New York, September 23 (BNA) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned on Thursday that the effects of climate change threaten to further escalate problems in regions that are already unstable or experiencing conflict.

“Clearly climate change and environmental mismanagement are risk multipliers where adaptation capacities are limited,” he told a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council on climate and security.

He said that reliance on dwindling resources, such as water, could exacerbate tensions on the ground, but added that these problems could be faced through the measures taken by the council and others, according to the German news agency (dpa) International.

“Climate adaptation and peacebuilding can and should be mutually reinforcing,” he said.

Several members of the powerful UN body have addressed this issue in the past, for example by trying to implement an early warning system for conflicts caused by the climate crisis, among other actions. However, there has not been enough support in the council yet.
