Union Berlin beats Hertha in derby, stays 2nd in Bundesliga

BERLIN, Jan. 28 (BNA): Union Berlin cemented their second place in the Bundesliga by beating Hertha Berlin 2-0 on Saturday, the Associated Press reports.

First-half goals from Danilo Doekhi and Paul Seguin gave Etihad a fourth successive league victory over old rivals and left Hertha mired in second-from-last after their third consecutive defeat at the start of the year.

Union Berlin has won the last five derbies, including the German Cup meeting last season.

Al-Ittihad only started threatening near the end of the first half. That was enough to snatch the lead in the 44th minute when Doukhi headed in a free kick from captain Christopher Tremmell.

It was the Dutch defender’s third goal in three appearances for Union, all in the same manner designed by Tremmel.

Seguin scored the goal in the 67th minute after the smoke cleared from the fans’ pyrotechnic display, slotting into the empty net after Chiraldo Becker’s cross to finish off a counter-attack.
