Union Berlin back on top of Bundesliga with last-second win

Berlin, Oct. 30 (BUS) – The surprise leader of Union Berlin continues to make miracles in the German Bundesliga, reports the Associated Press. Danilo Duekhi scored the winning goal in the last quarter of the match in the seventh minute of extra time to secure a 2-1 victory over Borussia Moenchengladbach on Sunday, bringing Union to the top of the standings.

Union was heading for defeat until the 79th minute when substitute Kevin Burns scored the equalizer for Nico Elvedi’s first-half goal for Gladbach. In the end, Doekhi rushed through a crowd of players to head Jamie Leweling’s cross from a corner routine, sparking wild celebrations from the union players and fans.

Ittihad returns to being one point ahead of Bayern Munich, who beat Mainz 6-2 on Saturday. Union earlier celebrated what was believed to be the winning goal in the 87th minute before a video review showed Kevin Trimmell was a hard-earned offside.

This is the second time that the VAR has played against Al Ittihad, after Rani Khedira’s shot hit the referee in the first half with the elbow of his colleague Sheraldo Becker. After Elvedi’s header in the 33rd minute gave Gladbach the lead from a corner kick, substitute Burns responded in the 79th minute by beating goalkeeper Tobias Seibel to score, although he fired with Seibel’s fist in the process.

Byrnes collapsed to the ground before recovering to celebrate with his teammates. He was able to play and almost scored again three minutes later. The dramatic win was a boost for Union, who were four points ahead of Bayern until their loss to relegation-threatened Bochum last week.
