UN sets 5-year goal to broaden climate early warning systems

Geneva, March 23 (BNA) – The United Nations Secretary-General on Wednesday announced a project to put every person on earth within five years of early weather warning systems, as natural disasters grow in strength and frequency due to climate change.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the project with the Geneva-based World Meteorological Organization aims to make warning systems already used by many wealthy nations available to the developing world, reports the Associated Press.
“Today, one third of the world’s population, especially in least developed countries and small island developing states, is still not covered by early warning systems,” Guterres said. “In Africa, the situation is worse: 60% of people lack coverage.”

“This is unacceptable, especially with climate impacts that are sure to get worse,” he said. “We must enhance the predictive power of everyone and build their capacity to act.”

Early warning systems allow for real-time monitoring of weather conditions at sea and on land as a means of forecasting upcoming weather events – whether in cities, rural areas, mountainous or coastal areas, arid or polar locations
