UK to make it easier to repeal or amend law copied from EU

London Jan. 31 (BNA): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will announce on Monday the “Freedom Exit Bill” to make it easier to remove or amend EU regulations that have been transcribed into the country’s law before it leaves the bloc.

To avoid ambiguity and confusion with Brexit after 40 years, the government automatically allowed thousands of EU laws and regulations to apply in post-Brexit Britain.

Under current rules, reforming and repealing EU law will take several years, the government said on Monday. She said the new legislation would facilitate the changes to ensure the regulations were better suited to Britain, according to Reuters.

“The new Brexit Freedoms Bill will end the special status of EU law in our legal framework and ensure we can easily amend or remove old EU law in the future,” Johnson said in a statement.

The government said it will also publish a policy document on how it plans to take advantage of its exit from the European Union, which was formally done two years ago on Monday, to make changes to its regulatory framework and cut red tape.

He said plans would include setting up a data rights system, improving public procurement, creating a local subsidy monitoring system to support the British economy and reducing the reporting burden for small and medium-sized businesses.

Surveys of British companies and official data have shown that many companies, especially exporters, have found Brexit to be a challenge.
