UK museum agrees to return looted Benin Bronzes to Nigeria

London, August 7 (BNA) A museum in London agreed, Sunday, to return a group of colonial-era artifacts that were looted in the late nineteenth century from what is now Nigeria as cultural institutions across Britain.

Horniman Museum and Gardens in southeast London said it will transfer a collection of 72 objects to the Nigerian government, according to the Associated Press.

The decision came after Nigeria’s National Commission of Museums and Archeology formally requested the return of the artifacts earlier this year and after consulting with community members, artists and schoolchildren in Nigeria and the UK, the museum said.

“The evidence is very clear that these objects were obtained by force, and external consultations have supported our view that it is ethical and appropriate to return them to Nigeria,”

Yves Salomon, chair of the museum’s board of trustees, said in a statement. “Horniman is pleased to be able to take this step, and we look forward to working with NCMM to secure long-term sponsorship of these precious artifacts.”
