Uganda says Ebola caseload rises to 16 as outbreak grows

Kampala, Sept. 26 (BNA): Uganda on Sunday said the number of Ebola cases has jumped to 16 while 18 people are also likely to contract the disease, raising fears of an outbreak involving a strain for which a vaccine has yet to be vaccinated. have found.

The Ministry of Health also said in a tweet that the number of deaths from confirmed cases is still four, while 17 others have died, classified as probable cases. Reuters reported that the outbreak has now also spread to three districts, all in central Uganda.

The East African country last week announced an outbreak of Ebola, a hemorrhagic fever whose symptoms include severe body weakness, muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea and rashes among others.

Authorities said the current outbreak, attributed to the Ebola strain in Sudan, apparently started in a small village in Mubindi district at the beginning of September.

The first victim was a 24-year-old man who died earlier this week.

The World Health Organization says the Sudan Ebola strain is less transmissible and has shown a lower death rate in previous outbreaks than Ebola Zaire, the strain that killed nearly 2,300 people in the 2018-2020 epidemic in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.
