UEFA slams FIFA for failure to respond over biennial World Cup talks

Berlin, September 22 (BNA): The European Football Association (UEFA) was strongly criticized today, Wednesday, for its plans to host the World Cup once every two years, and for its failure to agree to hold a special meeting.

The European arm said in a statement after its executive committee meeting in Chisinau, Moldova, that the European Football Association requested more than a week ago to speak with FIFA, but the International Federation has not yet responded.

FIFA, which is conducting a feasibility study on the issue and launched a controversial fan poll last week, plans to discuss the proposals with all member associations on Thursday next week.

The online summit will discuss the future of the international match calendar, which ends at the end of 2023 for women and 2024 for men.

FIFA wants the men’s World Cup to be held every two years instead of every four years from 2028, which would force continental tournaments such as the European Championship to also take place every two years from 2025. This will also follow the women’s match.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has threatened to boycott the World Cup if the proposals are implemented.

UEFA believes that the value of the World Cup will diminish and that weaker national teams will have fewer chances as regular international matches will be replaced by finals.

She also believes that players will be overburdened and the women’s tournaments may have to be played at the same time as the men’s tournaments, reducing their visibility.
